top three christmas tracks to get you in the holiday spirit. call me a traditionalist but christmas songs are the best sung by artists from our parents generation…except for Wham’s last christmas of course.

reminds me of last christmas when a bunch of us grew our hair into mullets and rented a cabin up in the mountains and each brought our blond girlfriends…what a great memory…we wore a lot of turtlenecks…

blood red maple

jotted this down after stumbling across shinjuku goen yesterday following some holiday gift shopping. i can’t belive it’s taken me this long to discover what is probably the most beautiful park in the city. all the flat ground a man needs to roll bocce, beautiful winding paths, coy ponds and ancient trees dazzling in their fall colours. one old man of the forest in particular struck me with much awe and i sat for quite some time in a wooden pergola overlooking the japanese maple on a hill above a large coy pond. the juxtaposition of the bustling city shopping block and the meditative repose of the park shocked me out of the consumer stupor i had been in all morning and afternoon.

blood red maple

blood red maple
raging fire in my veins
burst forth from a wooden nervous system
burst forth from roots as old as
time

in the autumn of your life
warmed by the heat of a thousand suns
wise old man who has lived through so much
who has seen so much

emperors are born and die
under the shade of your wooden arms
battles are fought and empires crumble
in the impenetrable shadow of your mighty stalk
history is etched in your very skin
and your blood is the blood of a nation
proud and mysterious
it is the blood of the shogun
the samurai
it is so much the blood of the peasant

blood red maple
in this the autumn of our life
which was predicted in the first shoot of your might brow
and now smolders
in the raging fire of your bloody cannopy

you who have heard so much
the confession of murderers
the cooing of lovers
a mother’s tears as they fall in pond of coy

blood red maple
if you could speak on the eve
of our great demise
what would you say to a deaf man

garmisch retrospective 02-06

since it’s that time of the year when, in days past, the consortium would find themselves carving up the slopes of the majestic german and austrian alps it seems appropriate that a post is dedicated to winter break trips of the past. it brings a tear to a grown man’s eye as he leafs through the photos from a time back in the day and reflects upon a life less hectic. the yearly garmisch trip with the consortium and friends/family will always represent some of the best moments of my life, i’m sure of that. the days were filled with fresh powder and majestic scenery while the nights were consumed with raucous laughter, hours of domino playing, drinking and partying. who among us will forget the rooms we slept in at haus lilly and the wizened proprietor, frau lechner – with her delicious breakfasts and crazy german ranting and that time she got drunk off the wine we gave her as a gift. for nine years the consortium whether fully intact or only in skeleton crew, called haus lilly their home and this winter marks the first in nearly a decade that we have not reunited for days of boarding and nights of camaraderie. i can see i wax on, my friends, so i will bring this to a close and proceed with the photo retrospective of those happy days in deutschland from ‘02 to ‘06. auf wiedersehen

in tokyo on saturday to knock out the christmas shopping. stopped through ginza in the evening and had ’silver bells’ stuck in my head all night. there really isn’t anything like christmas time in the city, wherever that city may be.

a little random, but i found this in some back street of aoyama – advertising one of the 100,000 salons in aoyama/harajuku – where are all the girls that look like this?

chillin on the street

z kicking it with the mamasans

apple!

when the bus moves…

go!

lights as far as the eye can see…

on the way home we stopped for ice cream…only in japan does ice cream come in an edible heart shaped wafer that’s packaged in a plastic bag

z seems to love it

coca cola with that over the top christmas marketing
